Gruver Tx | I’m in a different climate but have used planter to plant covers in August several years. I planted rye oats radishes sunflowers sorghum Sudan and vetch. I had precision electric meters and they could not spin fast enough to get population I wanted at 5 mph. I planted slower and still had alarms going off with the occasional over amp. I drilled first cover crops and had trouble with seeding rates. Usually ran out before got field planted and can’t go to town and pickup same blend if out. The planter however came out very close to target. I ended up moving slightly off row to plant corn and grain sorghum that spring. I wanted more soil interaction and ended up building a twin row unit with Valmar seed box from Big Iron cast offs and have been very happy with it. Very accurate seeding and great seed placement. A Notill drill on 15” spacing would be great also but I built this way cheaper and like the openers. I have evolved or the years and kind of settled into this system which works for me in my climate.
Another system I really liked was planting covers on 7.5s with air seeder then killing out 10” bands on 30” with herbicide in spring. Still have some living covers but plant into dead 10” strip. Still have some plants if it gets wet to dry out but not so many as to use up too much soil moisture. I copied this from Matt Griggs in Tennessee.
