Subject: RE: backgrounding beef calves

I have been netting $140 to $200 per head buying light weight steers and heifers, 300 to 450 pounds, at the sale barn.  Run them on grass in season and feed prairie hay and oats hay through the winter.  Year round supplement of about 3 pounds of ground grain a day.  After 20 to 28 weeks, they go back through the sale barn.  I haven't found any feedlots that will give that type of profit on a per head basis.  Annual rate of return on investment has been running about 32 to 36%.
