SW Saskatchewan | As combine ken says, the trick to efficent use of barley is to control particle size. Common belief is that fine grinding for beef animals leads to acidosis in the rumen from too rapid fermentation of the small particles.
Tempered rolling to prevent kernel break-up is the favored approach (common method is to run a garden hose at full into a 7" auger when first drawing grain from the bin- works because of residual heat in grain even at 40 below-maybe!).
It is easy to see any losses that one can attribute to "undigested kernels" but there are other losses through digestion and the losses from small particle size can out weigh some undigestibility in whole kernels. | |
