So. IL
Why does my dog drag his behind on the ground?

The most common reason for a dog "scooting" or dragging their rear end on the ground is impacted anal glands. The anal glands are small glands on either side of the rectal opening that normally discharge when the dog defecates. In some animals they may become infected and/or blocked causing the pet to experience discomfort. They try to diminish this discomfort by rubbing the area along the ground. If the problem is ongoing a veterinary visit is needed to examine the area and if necessary empty the anal glands.
