NE Colorado | Last year in NE Colorado I planted wheat about mid November into dry dirt. It just laid there and we got two feet of snow in December which stayed on the ground until March. Not long after the snow melted the wheat came up and looked pretty good until a severe hail wiped it out in May.
I have seen wheat seed lay in dry dirt and not come up until the following spring several times and as long as there is moisture available to sprout it as soon as possible, it seems to do well but should be planted thicker as it doesn't tiller much. The only time I saw poor results is when there was no moisture to get it up until late March or when it was planted really deep.
I still would rather see the wheat come up in the fall, though, and get some growth on it but not excessive growth as that sucks out too much moisture, also sometimes the stuff planted really early is more susceptible to late spring freezes as it flowers somewhat earlier as well.
