Subject: The way the "70%" was explained to me was..........

Oskaloosa, Iowa 52577
70% of "a cubic inch" so-to-speak of manure would be mineralized in the first year..........but because of the method of application of the manure, that does not mean that all of the manure would be physically available to the plant. So, if the roots only reach, say, 50% of the soil area, and 70% of that is mineralized, then 35% of the load applied for that year is available.

IE, if all of the manure could be banded, and the planter would plant in that band, then 70% of the physical "stuff" would be available within that band, and probably utilized by the plant.

Based on that "theory", we have "overapplied" manure from field-wide perspective, using broadcasting, for the last three years, because our soils were so depleted. "Theorectically", assuming that the planter plants in a different strip each year, we are not overapplying with respect to that strip.

Our soil tests are starting to show that we ought to be able to start cutting back to normal application rates shortly.
