We’ve known how to minimize odors from a LAFO for a long time – use aerobic lagoons (or use covered anaerobic lagoons and burn the methane). That has been known for 40 plus years but “farmers” claim that the approach is too expensive and too management intensive. Purdue studies have shown that obnoxious odors (sulfur containing volatile compounds) released from anaerobic lagoons can be cut in half just by reducing sulfur amino acid levels in the feed to requirement levels. This would actually save producers money.

People today claim that pork doesn’t taste like it used to – and they are absolutely right. Pigs used to consume thousands of chemicals that are not in today’s diets from feeding behind the cattle, or in the dirt.

You are correct. Free range animals are frequently the cause of significant environmental problems. In a local watershed study, beef cows wading in the crick were the primary cause of sediment release.

Not in any camp. Just a simple observer. Have seen corporate livestock producers screw farmers and natural producers screw farmers and farmers screw fellow farmers. When citizens realize that bad air quality has a health price, rules will change.
