| I'd completely agree with your statement.
We try to breed at 15 months, and have a 900lb heifer at the time of breeding. Most of our mature cows will weigh 13-1400 in their working clothes.
If you have good quality hay, cut out the grain. Those heifers don't need that much energy and the extra weight will screw them up.
Always try to have them gaining weight at breeding time, starting a little on the thin side about 60 day prior, and at breeding time they should carry a little flesh. You will have better conception rates, and a more productive cow in the end.
