Yorktown, TX | Yeah, if the cow's water breaks and she doesn't push the calf out quick enough the brain and facial area build up fluid due to lack of oxygen. This can happen due to a tough birth, or something scared her in the middle of the birth. This can be easily told by a calf that is very puffy around the eyes and constantly has its tongue hanging out. Most of the time the calf lives for a while but doesn't get up and basically starves to death. These calves can be somewhat nursed out of this condition, but most of them catch pneumonia and die. At least that has been my luck. If it is up and running around, keep an eye on it, but it will probably be fine. | |
