| When I sheep farmed, 2nd lambing and on, if they didn't twin they were gone. If I had to assist lambing at anytime they were gone, bad disposition they were gone, poor milkers they were gone. If their lambs were consistently smaller than average, they were gone. Cull hard and cull often. Using the same hardline culling on my cows and down the road you really start to appreciate it, although it is hard when you are trying to build a herd or cull prices are really bad. I only saved ewes that were twins for replacements. I don't know what the research says, but my own experience multiple births was very heritable, so is mothering ability. Always wanted twins, more than two and it seemed you would get a runt with triplets or quads. Always raised dorsets and aimed for 3 lamb crops every two years. | |
