Subject: Re: Composting Bedded Pack Dairy Barns

Pine City, MN
There are many of them in Minnesota. The cows will not be as clean as sand bedded free stalls. The cow comfort will be maybe a little better. The big thing is heat stress, it is hot on compost. We composted our 6-12 month old hfrs for a while worked ok saved a little on bedding cost. After saw dust got to expensive we went back to straw. I still rather have sand bedded free stalls for every animal 6 months and older. More up front cost but sand is cheap hfrs barely use any, cows will use more in the summer but not to bad. Good fly control will help a lot.
