Driftless SW Wisconsin

No, I did not try to drill the clover into frozen ground. The coulter/double disc drill I rented would never go into frozen ground!

I think you get better results when you seed at the proper time - probably early April in N IN, N IL, S WI.

I did try "frost seeding" (spreading seed on frozen ground in spring thinking the cracking from spring freeze/thawing would establish a stand) a couple years ago which was a total waste of seed and time in my opinion. Maybe I just didn't do it right or at the right time.

When the weather and soil is right to be seeding lettuce in the garden is the time to drill/interseed a pasture, in my opinion. I wouldn't/couldn't seed lettuce into frozen ground.

Why go to all this trouble and not get a stand? If you get a good stand as I finally got in the pictures above (about my third try) it is worth doing it right. jmho.
