East River SoDak | We've got a 200 acre pasture where we calve that needs all new fence. Am strongly leaning towards a high tensile fence mostly because late in the spring when the grass is eaten down the cattle tend to put a lot of pressure on the fences. There's a few things i am questioning, though. Is an electric fence with a baby calf a good combination. Would it be a good idea to only charge the top wires so a calf couldn't get pushed into a hot one? Also, these cows go to this pasture in late March or early April and usually there's still a few snowbanks on the fences. The cattle don't really put pressure on the fences early in the spring then so maybe that wouldn't be an issue? Would a 4 wire fence be good enough and how far apart do you space your posts? Also, wood, steel or every other? This is northeast South Dakota so we get a lot of snow, wind, and hard snowbanks in the ditches. Thanks for any tips or advice. | |
