I don't have experience with other breeds but based on a neighbor's expert experience and advice I got into Herefords and find they are so far calving well on their own and mostly pretty good temperament. There are also differences within the breed as mentioned above. I did have one Hereford cow that was nuts and not fun to work with at all - at least until she turned into hamburger. Here's one of my favorite "temperment" photos. They are usually much more white faced but had their heads in a couple big bales. Still have to keep an eye on them, especially the bull. Anybody showing any aggressive tendencies is next in line on the trailer. Jim at Dawn edit: I'm feeling more and more that diet and management have a lot to do with the unassisted calving as well as breed. Mineral program especially.
