I wouldn't worry about baby calves and an electric fence. Our calving pasture has nothing but a smooth 2 wire electric fence all the way around. They have to learn at some point, If they get through, They will come back, Or mamma will be on the other side waiting for them.

We really like our high tensil in the pastures. Our's is a 6 wire (Probably 2 many wires, but we did not build it) The 2nd and 4th wires from the top are hot. The biggest thing if you are building the fence new is to keep the bottom wire off the ground 10-12 inches. The guy who built ours was trying to keep in sheep and put the bottom wire close to the ground and after about 5 years it was in the dirt, and we had to move everything up.

I would go with strictly wood posts through all the revines if you have hills, Lot of tension and the fence will want to pull the posts out of the ground if it is too tight. Otherwise ours is 1 wood then 2 steel, or 1 wood and 3 steel with spacing every 12 feet between the posts.
